I am proud to announce that About Time Solution Ltd site operatives, supervisory staff and project managers have all passed their PASMA course. This involved three main elements: 1) theory, 2) practical, and 3) who could eat the most doughnuts at tea breaks!

The course was taken at Brandon Tool Hire training facilities in Swindon and delivered by an industry expert (we just called him Gavin!). The course was well done and very informative; it was also very long, testing, and certainly not a day off work. The main aim was to make certain that our staff had the knowledge and training, including hands-on, to ensure that we comply with legal requirements, although it also helped further our drive to reduce accidents for all.

According to statistics from the Health and Safety Executive (HSE), slips and trips are the single most common cause of injuries at work, and account for over a third of all major work injuries. They cost employers over half a billion a year in lost production and other costs, and account for over half of all reported injuries to members of the public. Since 2008/9, the HSE has changed the way it records slips, trips and falls, and now includes falls from height.

All employees, visitors, members of the public and contractors who are in the workplace are at equal risk. With workplace insurances only able to cover a part of the costs, the costs to employers of legal actions resulting from falls can be considerable. For these reasons, About Time Solutions Ltd felt it was smart business to get trained.

In 2014/15, over half the fatal injuries to workers were of three kinds: falls from height; being struck by a vehicle and being struck by a moving or falling object. Handling was the most frequent cause of over-seven-day injury (RIDDOR); an estimated 2.1 million working days were lost due to handling injuries and slips & trips (LFS). I need a lie down after all that, but at least it will be a controlled lie down and not a fall.

I want to thank all the staff for attending and for passing with flying colours. Since the training, and after several site visits, I am pleased to report that what was learned has been fully put into practice. These are the standards expected by the workforce and sub-contractors, and About Time Solutions Ltd will continue to expand their training matrix to include not only legal required training but also best practice.
